A Super Yacht is a luxury beyond the grasp of many of us, but those floating palaces hold the key to a global industry expected to hit $10 billion dollars by 2026. The nature of the industry itself, relies on the environment, the planet’s beautiful oceans, marine wildlife and scenery. The protection of the environment is therefore an integral part to the survival of the business.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the Super Yacht business boomed with the number of vessels under construction or on order worldwide exceeding 1,200, a new record and a rise of 25% on last year.
One of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) identified by the United Nations (UN) to be achieved by 2030 is the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources (SDG 14).
With a view to taking action to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the International Maritime Organisation has set the target of reducing annual greenhouse emissions by at least 50% and Co2 by 70% by 2050.
There is no doubt that the super yacht industry will be under increasing pressure to become more sustainable.
After 25 years as a Captain of Super Yachts, Nigel Marrison has set up the Conscious Yachting Club to provide tools and resources to fast track yachts towards a sustainable future. Nigel's vision is to transform the operational side of the yachting industry, and to evolve yachting into a cleaner, greener activity.
