The UK is the second largest importer of timber, second only to China. We use around 50 million tonnes of timber a year which the UKs forests would find impossible to supply at current levels, in fact, less than 10% of the timber used in Britain is home-grown.
According to climate change advisers, the UK needs 1.5bn more trees in order to reach goals on carbon dioxide extraction and helping to restore natural habitats.
The Committee on Climate Change wants to see 27,000 hectares of trees planted a year by 2030, a level not seen since the 1970s, when tax breaks encouraged planting but gave the industry a poor reputation.
